Orifice Plate

Orifice Plate is a flow measurement device used to determine the flow rate of liquids and gases in a pipeline. It functions by creating a restriction, which reduces pressure and controls the flow of the medium. It is commonly used in hydrocarbon transmission systems. Due to its flow restricting function, it is also referred to as a restriction plate. Measurement accuracy depends on the precision and finish of the plate. The design allows for straightforward installation and maintenance. As fluid passes through the bore of the plate, velocity increases while pressure decreases at the downstream side. Further along the pipeline, the velocity reduces and pressure recovers.

The geometry and manufacturing tolerances of orifice plates are defined by international standards to ensure accurate correlation between flow rate, differential pressure, and bore size. Orifice plates are installed between a set of Orifice Flanges in a straight section of pipe to minimize flow disturbances from fittings and valves.
