ASTM A53 Grade B pipe is also known as ASME SA53 pipe. It is designed for high-pressure applications as well as mechanical and structural uses. This grade is suitable for welding and forming operations such as flanging, bending, and coiling, subject to standard qualification requirements. ASTM A53 pipes are available in NPS ¼" to 30" diameters in Grade B, covering schedules 10 through 160, including STD, XH, and XXH. Both seamless and welded pipes are manufactured using processes such as electric furnace, open-hearth, or basic oxygen methods.

Testing of the pipe- 
Hydrostatic testing is performed to verify pressure integrity for plain-end, threaded, and coupled pipes. The specified hydrostatic pressure is maintained for all sizes of seamless and electric resistance welded (ERW) pipes. Mechanical testing includes tensile testing as required by the specification. For ERW pipes of NPS 8 and above, transverse testing is conducted. Bend tests are required for XS in NPS 2 and below, and for STD in NPS 1¼ and below. Flattening tests are carried out for NPS 2 and larger sizes in XS and STD schedules.

Length of pipe-
ASTM A53 Grade B Pipe in standard weight is supplied in single random and double random lengths. Single random length ranges from 16 ft to 22 ft. Double random length has a minimum of 22 ft, with an average length of approximately 35 ft. A maximum of 5% jointers is permitted for both categories. For extra strong (XS) or double extra strong (XXS) pipes, single random length ranges from 12 ft to 22 ft. Double random short length is 22 ft, with a minimum average of 35 ft. Buyers can specify the exact required length at the time of ordering to ensure suitability for the intended application.
