ASTM A240 Stainless Steel 316 / 316L Coil refers to molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel supplied in coil form and produced in accordance with ASTM A240 / ASME SA240 specifications. Grade 316 / 316L offers improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride environments, along with reliable mechanical strength at elevated temperatures. These chromium-nickel-molybdenum coils can be formed, rolled, and fabricated using conventional methods. Welding characteristics are good; Grade 316 may require post-weld annealing to restore corrosion resistance, whereas low carbon 316L is generally used where post-weld heat treatment is not preferred.

Both 316 and 316L coils are commonly specified for process equipment, paper and pulp handling, food processing equipment, medical instruments, kitchen equipment, and fabrication applications where corrosion resistance is required. The two grades share similar properties and are often supplied with dual certification to meet both 316 and 316L chemical composition and mechanical requirements, depending on project specifications.

Material may be offered in annealed condition with additional processing such as heat treatment, slitting, and cladding where applicable.
